To satisfy its mission the APDLA undertakes a wide range of
activities which include a free consultancy service; organizing a wide
range of events including book launches, readings and video screenings;
organizing exhibitions, performances and talks by artists and critics.
1. Outreach and Education
The APDLA's outreach and education events support the mission
of the organization by deepening the understanding of artists' publications
and offering individual artists, or groups of artists, greater public
exposure.
The APDLA organizes
large-scale exhibitions in an effort to contextualize artists' publications
historically, aesthetically and culturally. Broadly these exhibitions
fall into two categories: works by individual artists who have been instrumental
in the development of artists books, and group exhibitions that address
particular issues associated with the artists book medium.
The APDLA also organizes and allows artists
to use its space, at no charge, for book launches and readings.
2. Publishing
Recently the APDLA has begun an ambitious program of publishing
prints, multiples and photographic portfolios to support the organization's
annual operating budget.
3. Consultancy
The staff of the APDLA offers a consultancy and information service
to artists who produce artists' books, individual members of the public,
archives, collections, curators, libraries and educators. The range of
services includes working with curators who are organizing exhibitions
that are inclusive of the medium and supplying them with titles. Institutions
that have participated in this activity within the past year include.
The APDLA also maintains and distributes lists of useful addresses
related to the medium.
